Preview – Samsung NP700Z5A-S02US
One new laptop making its way to market is the Samsung Series 7 NP700Z5A-S02US. What’s neat about this laptop is that it’s super thin with an aluminum casing that puts it in the same league as a MacBook in terms of design. Samsung is touting the Series 7 line to be extremely thin with the 14-inch model fitting in the “equivalent of a 13-inch chassis.”
While not quite as small as the Series 7 14-inch model, the Samsung NP700Z5A-S02US is a 15.6 inch laptop with a 1600×900 display. Even though it’s not a super high resolution screen, it is a nice option for budget conscious gamers, since the laptop has a retail price of $1,199. The Samsung NP700Z5A-S02US also boasts a new Intel Core i7-2675M quad-core processor. This updated Sandy Bridge chip runs at 2.2GHz with 6MB of L3 cache.
For gaming purposes, the Samsung NP700Z5A-S02US features an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card. The HD 6750M has 480 stream processing units (shaders), making it a good contender for the midrange gaming laptop sector.
Samsung also is adding value by including an 8GB SSD with a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. While the SSD is quite small, it allows you to take advantage of the performance boost of having an SSD for a boot drive and larger drive for storage. You’ll enjoy faster boot up times with this configuration over a system that only has a traditional hard disk.
The gaming laptop also has features that are becoming the norm, including USB 3.0 ports and 6GB of DDR3 memory. It’ll be interesting to see how this system fares upon release in October. Stay tuned for a full detailed review in the coming months.
